Alexis Baró y La Big Band presents AFROKANDO on International Jazz Day
.
On April 30, in celebration of International Jazz Day, Cuban-born Canadian trumpeter, composer, and arranger Alexis Baró brings his 19-piece ensemble Alexis Baró y La Big Band to the Glenn Gould Theatre for the official live debut of music from their critically acclaimed album Afrokando, recently nominated for Best Jazz Group of the Year at the 2026 JUNO Awards.

The program features Baró’s original compositions and arrangements, highlighting rhythmic complexity, expansive horn writing, and dynamic improvisation, performed by some of Canada’s leading jazz musicians. The concert marks a major artistic milestone for Baró, internationally recognized as a virtuosic trumpeter and now emerging as a powerful voice in large-ensemble composition and leadership.
